The Dangers of Having a High Cholesterol Level
At my last annual physical exam my doctor found that I had a very high level of cholesterol. Until then, I didn’t realize just how little I knew about the condition, but, when he explained just how dangerous this was, I decided that I had best learn all I could. And that I did, getting my own problem under control in the process. Trust me when I tell you that controlling your cholesterol levels can be a life-or-death proposition. Maybe you’ll also better understand that getting high cholesterol foods out of your diet is very beneficial.
Your body requires cholesterol for a variety of functions. For our purposes, just understand that it is used by every cell in your body much as a bricklayer uses mortar. Your body also uses it to make bile acids that are used in your intestines.
Most, or, more often, all of the cholesterol you require is made in your liver. An enzyme known as low density lipoproteins, or LDL, delivers the cholesterol to your cells. Cells that have enough cholesterol when the LDL shows up will just say “No, Thanks” and send the enzyme on it’s way.
The problem is, LDL won’t carry left over cholesterol back to your liver. It deposits the excess on the inner walls of your arteries. The blood flow in the artery will eventually be choked off, starving the tissue further down the line. This is a major cause of strokes and heart attacks.
Of course, this is a very elementry view of problems with high cholesterol. I wanted only to get you to thinking a bit about cholesterol levels, and maybe look into your own.
