Gardening for Kids

If you want to have a good time with your children, teach them some wonderful values, get a little exercise, and foster an appreciation for solid work and reward, try gardening for kids.

Children love to dig around in the dirt. You might as well teach them to do so in a way that pays off in the end! Besides, it really is incredibly rewarding for kids of all ages to plant a seed, tend it, care for it, watch it grow, and then harvest the result of all that attention.

Your children don’t have to create a huge garden. Let them plant one or two short rows that are completely theirs. Teach them, but let them do the actual work for their plants. You may want to use the gardening experience to also teach record-keeping or journaling. Older children can keep track of costs and begin to learn the value of the money they sometimes take for granted.

Don’t expect too much from the first garden. Encourage daily attention to the garden, but allow your children to work in spurts. The idea is to let them have fun and so learn to love the gardening experience.

A few things to consider:

1. Start small.

2. Plan to work in small chunks of time.

3. The garden doesn’t have to be typical. Let your children plant what they like, even if it’s all one thing.

4. Don’t expect straight rows.

5. Even though small and atypical, the first garden is still a great place to learn.

For parents and grandparents, there is nothing better for building relationships, passing on values, and spending great quality time with the youngsters in your life than gardening for kids.
