The ‘Coronation Scot’ was a high speed luxury service run between London (Euston) and Glasgow (Central Station). It went into operation in 1937 and was the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) reply to the high speed trains put on by the LNER in 1935 and an attempt to lure passengers away from their rival.
The train was a major feature in LMS publicity, a source of great pride to its staff and an indication of future trends in passenger services.
Background
In 1936 the LMS made the decision to introduce a brand new train between London (Euston)and Glasgow (Central Station). The train was to be made up of nine coaches (292 tons) and be able to make the journey in 6.5 hours, even though a test train had done this in under 6 hours. The decision was made to call the train ‘Coronation Scot’ named to celebrate the coronation of King George VI in 1937. A decision was made to build a brand new Pacific locomotive for this service, which was based on the earlier Princess Royals built between 1933 and 1935.
At that time streamlining was all the rage. so from an early stage of the project a decision was taken, more likely by LMS publicity machine, to make the locomotives ’streamlined’ to show that the LMS was a ‘modern’ railway just like its rival the LNER.
The ‘Coronations’ differed from earlier locomotives, by having an increased boiler size with increased superheating. The driving wheels were increased in size by 3 inches to 6ft 9in and the cylinder diameter was fractionally enlarged so as to maintain the 40,000lb of tractive effort required for the task. The inside valves were operated by rocking levers so avoiding the inconvenience of having inside valve gear. This all led to the production of the most powerful express passenger locomotive built in Britain.
The Record Run
On the 29th June, the LMS took everyone by surprise by running a ‘Press Special’ from Euston to Crewe and back called the ‘Coronation Scot’. At the head of the train was locomotive 6220 ‘Coronation’. The 158.1 miles was covered in 135 minutes at an average speed of 70.2mph. The crew of the ‘Coronation’ was Driver Clarke and Fireman Lewis Also on the footplate were Robert Riddles and Inspector S. Miller. It was an open secret that the LMS were out to capture the British Railway speed record, which at the time was 113 mph held by the LNER, and the section of line between Norton Bridge and Crewe had been fettled up and the maximum speed of 90mph had been lifted.
The trip went unspectacularly until the 60mph restriction at Norton Bridge had been passed. Even then, the train was not accelerated as fast as it could have been and it topped Whitmore summit at no more than 85mph subsequent records showed that these locomotives could achieve 95mph here). The speed then increased but the train was worryingly close to Crewe before the LNER record was approached.
The entry to platform number three at Crewe was over three successive crossovers and the train was braking hard when it reached them and still travelling at speed. The train lurched severely sending crockery everywhere. The fact that everything stayed on the track was testament to the design of the locomotive and coaches.
Official timekeepers recorded a maximum speed of 112.5mph, but the LMS claimed a maximum speed of 114mph recorded on the chart taken from the speed-recorder on the locomotive. The total journey time was 129.75 minutes at an average speed of 73.1mph. The last 1.1 miles to the stop at Crewe was achieved in 1 minute 19 seconds!
The return trip to Euston was probably more interesting as it showed the sustained high speed potential of the ‘Coronation’ class locomotives. The overall journey time being 119 minutes at an average of 79.7mph, this included obeying speed restrictions of 30mph at Stafford and 40mph at Rugby. The highlight of the run was the 69.9 miles from Walton to Willesden Junction, which was covered in 47 minutes 1 second at an average of 89.3mph, with a maximum speed of 100mph at Castlethorpe water troughs. All this meant the LMS could claim the fastest start-to-stop runs of over 100 and 150 miles.
In order to commemorate the ‘Coronation Scot’, Hornby Railways was commissioned to produce a superb train pack depicting the service. Of particular interest to collectors, the Hornby Coronation Scot Train Pack was produced in a limited run of 2000, each with its own Certificate of Authenticity. The Hornby Train Pack comprises a streamlined Coronation Class locomotive and three coaches, all in the blue livery as opposed to the usual Crimson Lake livery of the LMS.

There are plenty of independent garages that will perform vehicle inspections. Never rely on the word of the dealer. An independent opinion is best. For under $50 you can avoid problems that could cost thousands, including the money spent on the used car purchase price.
Purchase the used car on price, not on payments. If the dealer is pushing payment amounts – I can get you in this car for $x a month – demand to know the purchase price. Do not use the dealers’ finance company, either, because that’s another way for them to add in extra that pushes up the real price of the used car. Pay cash or find your own loan. Remember to demand a discount for a cash payment.
It is possible to buy cheap used cars. There is a lot of help for buyers. Don’t let a shiny pitch trick you into a bad purchase.

Nothing can interrupt your driving excitement like a traffic ticket. Since I love to drive…fast that is, the general problem with it is called speeding tickets. I hate speeding tickets! That’s why I pay much attention to how to fight traffic tickets.
I know I am not the only one who has gotten one of these “infractions.” They are unfair for the most part. Like once I was taking on a road trip with my friend and I got pulled over for going 65 in a 30mph zone. There was no reduced speed limit warning coming off the freeway on the Oregon Coast. You need some knowledge on fight traffic tickets to handle this.
Obviously this did not matter to the cop who pulled me over. I cannot even begin to tell you how annoyed I get too when they ask why they pulled you over. I think they get enjoyment out of asking that stupid little phrase. Apparently they have to ask you this to get you to confess to your “crime.” It is not a crime! If you weren’t meant to speed then why do they make cars that go faster than the average speed limit? I tell you it is a government conspiracy! They force you to learn how to get out of a speeding ticket.
You know what else I hate about speeding tickets? Contesting them; not only does it take time out of your day it is usually at the most inconvenient time like during work hours. How much sense does it make? It is like a double whammy because your $100.00 ticket has now turned into a $200.00 ticket because you missed a day of work. We gotta stick it to the man and fight speeding tickets!
True story; I got off with a warning for going 90mph in a 30mph zone, passing on a double yellow in front of on coming traffic, which just so happened to be a green cop car, in a car registered in California, a drivers license issued in Washington and insurance in Arizona. I suppose if you are women and are lucky enough to get pulled over by a man, your have a better chance of getting just a warning then an actual ticket.
Now I would like to say that I got off with a warning because I was all jazzed up that day, but I would have to say for all those offenses which were pretty obvious, that I got off because he could not prove that I was speeding. I mean, he did not have radar so he could not have been able to pace me and there were no air cops either so he really did not have anything for his defense.
After reading this book I found on contesting speeding tickets, in hind sight I can say it was defiantly the lack of evidence that got me off the hook, not my smile. I have not gotten that lucky all the time but now I know I have a reliable defense when it comes to getting my tickets reduced or thrown out.
This defiantly beats the alternative called driving school which inevitably reduces you to ranks of elementary understandings of the color yellow meaning caution. My driving record is not exactly clean and my insurance is costing me a fortune so let me put it to you this way. I have trouble obeying the laws when it comes to my enjoyment.
Obviously to avoid speeding tickets you probably should not speed, but 1. I cannot stand being behind some old man with an oxygen tank in the back of his car; and 2. Most speed limits are too slow. I got a speeding ticket in an alley once for going 10 mph. Gimmi a break! My Grandma can walk faster than that.
Anyways, there are ways to beat traffic tickets. You just need to know where to find them and what your best line of defense is when it comes to contesting the infamous speeding ticket.

A beautiful and healthy skin is a big confidence booster. Some people are naturally beautiful and hence don’t use any skin care cosmetic. Then there are others, who don’t use skin care cosmetic due to their laziness. Still some feel that skin care cosmetic can harm their skin, and hence abandon the use of any kind of skin care cosmetic. However, there are a large number of people who do use skin care cosmetic (that’s why the business of skin care cosmetic is prospering).
So, is skin care cosmetic useful, or is it harmful? Well, the opinions seem divided. However, one thing is for sure – Looking beautiful is surely nice and very desirable. Also, too much skin care cosmetic can surely be harmful (as such, excess of anything is harmful). So, what does one do?
The first thing is to formulate (and follow) a skin care routine that will help keep your skin healthy and disease-free. The general recommendation is to cleanse and moisturise everyday, and tone and exfoliate occasionally (as and when needed).
Next thing is the skin care cosmetics that you would be using additionally (as beauty enhancers). These skin care cosmetics could either be part of your skin care routine or be applied only on special occasions (e.g. when attending a party etc).
The most important thing with skin care cosmetic is its selection. Here is a set of rules that you should use when selecting any skin care cosmetic:
* The general rule is to use products that suit your skin type. This is true both for the routine products and for the skin care cosmetic. So check the label to see what it says e.g. “for dry skin only” or “for all skin types” etc.
* Test the skin care cosmetic before using it. This can be done by applying the skin care cosmetic on a small patch of skin e.g. ear lobes and checking the reaction of your skin to the product
* Check the ingredients of the skin care cosmetic for chemicals that you are allergic to. Do not use products that are very harsh on skin e.g. products with high alcohol concentrations; such cosmetics might work for once but cause a long-lasting damage to your skin.
* More isn’t better. Ensure that you apply the products in right quantity (neither less not more). Also, be gentle with your skin and follow the right procedures for application of skin care products. Rubbing too hard or trying to squeeze a pimple can lead to permanent damage to your skin.
* Finally, if you have a skin disorder e.g. acne or even first glimpses of skin cancer etc, you should consult your dermatologist before using any skin care cosmetic.

Are you trying to improve your golf swing? If so, you need to think of the basics of a good golf swing everytime you’re on the course. One of the biggest problems that golfers tend to do is that they don’t think about the process, but just swing at the ball. Hitting the ball isn’t the hard part; it’s getting the ball to the area that is desirable for the game.
You need to understand the mechanics of good golf swing and what you have to do to be consistent every time. You should go through all the steps so that you can improve your game and become more accurate.
There are only three parts of the club that you need to get familiar with. First, you need to know about the clubface. The clubface is what controls your golf ball. You also need to know the club head is what controls the dimension of your golf stokes. The shaft is what will control the plane of your golf swing. As for the golf stroke, there are hinge action, centrifugal force, and inclined plane. They all have to do with the parts of your club and they will affect your golf stroke positively or negatively.
You should know that for a good golf stroke you need to have balance, steady head movements, and some rhythm. Basically you don’t want to move your head like you’re bobbing for apples; you need to look down and up once to get your body lined up. The key is to know when to shift your weight and this is where your balance comes into play. As for your rhythm the club shaft should move at the same time and speed as your left arm.
For a good stroke, you might never bend your left arm (if you are right handed). You also will need to take your back swing, hit the ball, and continue with the follow through. If you don’t follow through the ball will not be hit as good as you would have liked. You will also want to look at your stance before you do anything.
You will need to comfortably separate your legs, but you don’t have to feel like you are stretching. A comfortable stance is what will make your shot go far and it will help you focus on other things like your swing.
Your golf swing won’t improve over night (don’t I wish). You will want to practice daily. You can go to a golf range and practice or you can practice at your home – but don’t hit the ball. If you have an open field, you can proceed to hit the ball, but if you just practice and think about your stance and your swing, you will notice that your game will increase.

Flooding wreckage in the home can occur from any number of reasons, such as a heavy storm or hurricane. It can also occur from leaks or frozen and burst water pipes. When water seeps into insulation, studs or carpet, the dampness can lead to structural damage and mold contamination. Even a small amount of water can cause considerable damage that may be expensive to repair. Always consider a submersible sump pump
There are preventative measures that a homeowner can take to keep their basement water-free and help prevent the most common flooding destruction in basements.
Cracks in basement walls can allow water and moisture to enter. Waterproof coating the basement walls will keep moisture from passing through the walls due to hydrostatic pressure. (Pressure caused by water in the soil.) Any visible cracks should be filled with sealant and waterproof coating should be applied to the walls as directed.
Other leaks should be repaired, including any water pipe leaks. Even a slow leak can cause deterioration over time, particularly when the water is allowed to accumulate without drainage. Just one drop per second in water drips can add up to 2,700 gallons over a year and that is a lot of water and more damage.
Any drainage on the basement floor should work properly. If necessary, a Little Giant sump pump should be installed to remove any excess water. Select a Zoeller sump pumps that best meets your requirements and check it often to be sure that it’s properly working. The worst time to find out that it’s not working is the time you need it most.
Be sure to keep items, and particularly furniture, off the floor. Boxes made of cardboard tend to absorb moisture which can permit the growth of mold and make some destruction to clean up.
To stop wreckage Gutters should be kept clean to properly drain the water away from the foundation, preferably to a lower ground level. Water should not be allowed to collect anywhere near the foundation. Land should be graded so that it directs surface water away from the house.
Basement windows should have some sort of barrier to prevent rain or water leakage from entering the home.
If your home does become flooded, seek professional help to prevent wreckage and remove the water and properly dry the area out.
